The Giver

Lois Lowry

Speculative fiction

The main character, Jonas, lives in a utopia, a place where everything’s perfect. He is worried about the ceremony of twelve, where he’ll get his assignment that he’ll do in there community. He gets the assignment of the receiver of memory, and the people in the crowd are shocked. During his training the Giver is giving him memories of different feelings like love and warfare. Jonas realizes that something has to change in the community and he and the Giver plan something big.

I think that the message of this book is that you can’t make a utopia and that no matter how much you try you can’t have everything perfect. I think this because something is always wrong or you can’t make one. The reason why you can’t make one is because no one is perfect and if you look at Jonas’s community they are happy but when Jonas gets some memories he’s not happy and knows something has to change.

This book isn’t one of my favorites, but it’s up there. The reason is that there’s not a lot of action or exciting things that happen, but I was still into it. I would give this book a 4. It was an entertaining and easy read. I would recommend it to someone who likes to imagine a lot.
